| //"Thousands of large black ants last week fought a life-and-death battle at Jenderam Hilir, a kampong ten miles from Kajang, on the road to Seremban. An eye-witness Shamsuddin said today that when the battle was at its height two to three square yards of ground was black with 'elephant ants.' The fighting, which went on for two days was unusual, he said, because the ants were of the same species. Thousands of combat ants had their heads bitten off. The dead were buried by fellow warriors. People from nearby kampongs, who came to watch the battle, said it as an 'omen.' But just what it signified they were not sure."// (The Straits Times, 3 December 1954, Page 1: {{ :akhbar:straitstimes19541203-1-2-15.pdf ||}}[[https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19541203-1.2.15|"ANTS: A CIVIL WAR"]]). | //"Thousands of large black ants last week fought a life-and-death battle at Jenderam Hilir, a kampong ten miles from Kajang, on the road to Seremban. | | //"Five families in a kampong at Jenderam Hilir, 26 miles from here, were left homeless after a heavy storm yesterday. A sudden gust of wind, followed by torrential rain, toppled large rubber and durian trees. Five houses were destroyed, but the people occupying them escaped unhurt. Selangor Social Welfare officers today visited the storm victims and gave each family two blankets, clothing and $30. Halijah binte Kalifah Muda, 40, who was still suffering from shock, told the Straits times: 'My three children and I were talking in the hall when the storm broke. 'Then I heard the sound of a falling tree. I ran. I shouted to my children to run out of the house. 'We were just in time for a big durian tree fell where we had been sitting.' Halijah's house was destroyed."// (The Straits Times, 16 February 1956, Page 9: {{ :akhbar:straitstimes19560216-1-2-152.pdf ||}}[[https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/digitised/article/straitstimes19560216-1.2.152|"CHILDREN FLEE AS TREES TOPPLE"]]). |

| One of the strongest supporters in the drive for bettering the smallholders' lot is the Prime Minister, Tengku Abdul Rahman, who has taken a close interest in it, together with the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Tan Siew Sin. A personal touch to these exhibitions was supplied by the Tengku. He suggested that replanting 'comics' should be distributed as an effective means of reaching the smallholders. The Tengku told the organisers: 'when I go home in the evening, my daughter Mariam usually comes up to me, perches herself on my knee and reads her comics. 'Every now and then, when she comes across something she doesn't understand, she asks me about it. I find that I not only explain it to her, but I read the comics myself. 'I'm sure I'm not the only father to whom this happens. I think if we distribute comics attractive to children as well as containing an adult message, the chances of the message reaching the fathers are very good.' As a result of this suggestion, 100,000 comics entitled 'Towards Prosperity' ('Arah Kemaa'muran') were produced for distribution to the children of the hundreds of kampongs and small towns which exhibitions visit. ..... Radio Malaya has helped with daily announcements of the shows, and one of its staff has composed a Replanting Song, which will be heard over the air shortly."// \\ | One of the strongest supporters in the drive for bettering the smallholders' lot is the Prime Minister, Tengku Abdul Rahman, who has taken a close interest in it, together with the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr Tan Siew Sin.
